play safe! be safe!® is a multimedia fire safety education program designed specifically for young children. play safe! be safe! provides educators and parents with an engaging set of tools to help teach fire safety skills to young children. The program consists of in-person workshops for educators, a robust kit of educational tools and this interactive website of educational games and activities.
Since the program’s introduction in 1994, BIC Corporation, in cooperation with Fireproof Children, has distributed more than 114,000 kits across the U.S. and Canada and has presented more than 180 workshops in all U.S. states, Puerto Rico and every Canadian province.
The play safe! be safe!® kits have won numerous awards including the Rolf Jenson Partners in Public Education Award from the National Fire Protection Association and Best Curriculum Award from Early Childhood news, a journal published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Robert Cole Ph.D
President of Fireproof Children
Robert Cole, Ph.D is the president of Fireproof Children and one of the nation’s leading experts in fire safety education. He is continually requested as a trainer/speaker throughout North America regarding preschool fire safety education and community intervention for juvenile firesetting. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Bob has received two 3-year research grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study children’s unintentional injury. He is a co-author of Juvenile Firesetting: A Community Guide to Prevention and Intervention, and the author or co-author of numerous articles on children and fire for Fire Chief, Firehouse, Children and Families, Young Children and other national journals.

Previously Molly served as Director of Fire Administration for the Rochester Fire Department (RFD), supporting fire prevention programs, code enforcement and community outreach. A graduate of Cornell University, she has also been active in the disabilities community as a Board member of the Regional Center for Independent Living and as the City of Rochester representative on the City-County Council for People with Disabilities. Molly is also on the Board of Directors of Mary’s Place Outreach, which supports refugee families recently resettled in Rochester.
